If you or a loved one has a substance abuse problem, your health care professional may have recommended that you enter an alcohol rehab program. However, many people are unfamiliar with the nature and scope of programs such as these, and have no idea what will take place, or what purpose they will serve in their recovery from an addiction.
Drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs are designed to first, to help individuals conquer their need for the substance they have abused, and help them with the issues that have brought them under the influence of an addiction. Once an individual is able to understand the nature of their illness, an alcohol rehab program can help them to cope with the stresses and temptations they will face them outside of the program's structured environment.
The first step is to consult with your primary care physician for their recommendations on the type of program that may be of the most benefit. There are many different methods and philosophies in treating addictions, and not all of them will be appropriate to a potential patient/client's needs. You may end up weighing the benefits of an in-house treatment, against outpatient counseling, and a "step-down" program afterwards, where the person lives in a protected environment.
Most drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs will require an assessment of the individual they will be treating. This can be done during a visit to their facility, or occasionally through an online or telephone interview, followed by a personal visit.
Depending on the outcome of that assessment, an alcohol rehab center will make recommendations with regard to which of their programs will be most beneficial.
An important aspect of any program for treating drug and alcohol addiction, is not just to focus on the individual who has the problem, but to involve their family and friends, so that the patient/client has assurance and support from the people close to them, and so that those around them will also have a guide through the often confusing, and frustrating path to sobriety, for someone they love.
